Strongyloidiasis is a tropical parasitosis that represents a significant public health problem in tropical
countries. It is often asymptomatic in immunocompetent patients; its mortality rate increases to
approximately 87% when presented in severe forms of the disease. We conducted a systematic review to
better understand this parasitosis' epidemiology in severe forms. Case reports and case series of
Strongyloides hyperinfection and Strongyloides dissemination were searched from 1998 to 2018 using
PubMed. Cases that met the inclusion criteria of the Preferred Reported Items for Systematic Reviews and
Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist were analyzed. A total of 202 case reports were included in this review.
Heterogeneity of risk factors, initial presentation, diagnosis, and treatment were considered. Statistical
analysis was performed for achieving a better understanding of the factors that affect prognosis since we
are still in need of a better understanding of the decisive factors in the outcome of patients.
